Shakyamuni Buddha taking the earth as witness (Bhumisparsa mudra) is seated in padmasana on his throne, festooned with lotus leaves and supported by four elephants. The elephant is one of the most popular symbols of Buddhism and is particularly associated with abundance, fertility, strength... also mental: Lucidity and clairvoyance. It is also the mount of kings. This image of the Buddha is carved in one piece and covered with lacquer (Thayo), Ava style, Shan States, 18th/19th century.
