"Verona School, Italy 17th Century. Adoration Of The Three Wise Men"
Oil on slate Italy, 17th century period. Presented in a precious “Cassetta” frame in carved and gilded wood. Total dimensions: 44 x 52.5 cm. The slate: 23 x 31 cm Painted on a slate plate, this rare baroque painting is undoubtedly to be placed in the circle of painters of the Verona school, the best known of which is Alessandro Turchi known as l'Orbetto. Their specificities were to propose and create charming paintings, executed on stone, slate, marble, onyx and lapis lazuli (for the most refined) intended for private oratories. For the slate, careful polishing will allow the artist to place his characters on a black background which will perfectly imitate a nocturnal atmosphere, shiny and smooth. Powerful overhead lighting will illuminate the scene in “chiaroscuro” in the pure tradition of the Caravaggio painters. Our little painting represents one of the most charming and colorful subjects; an adoration of the Three Wise Men Exceptional state of conservation because the unfractured slate has remained intact.
