Inscribed on the back of the frame "Portrait of Mademoiselle Mélanie Lannuyer (later Madame JB Madou) painted by herself.
Mélanie Lannuyer was a Belgian painter, student of Navez and half-sister of Adolphe Quetelet. She married the painter Jean Baptiste Madou in September 1833. It was she who encouraged him to paint canvases representing all ages and social conditions.
