Rare can take on its full meaning here, of all the chariot clocks, that of Mercury is the most difficult to find. Designed, chiseled and marketed by the bronzier Claude Galle (1759-1815) at the beginning of the 19th century, this clock in gilded bronze and brown patina, for the horse, was created by Croutelle the elder.
Indeed, a preparatory pen drawing with watercolor highlights inscribed under the name and dated: Croutelle ainé, n° 126 of the year 1803, is kept at the National Library (Cabinet des Estampes).
This magnificent clock represents Mercury, standing on a carriage taking the form of a bale of cotton and four wheels of fortune, holding his caduceus in his left hand and the reins of his horse in the other. The patinated bronze animal wears a saddle and a necklace chiseled with gilded bronze flowers. On the rectangular base, a decoration with the attributes of the mythological god: garlands of flowers, cornucopias, caduceus and laurel leaves. On the sides, a decoration with the attributes of maritime trade: very finely chiseled anchors and tridents.
The whole thing rests on four spinning top legs.
Revised movement, in perfect working order, with eight days of running time, chimes at half past hours on gong, suspension of the balance by wire and Breguet hands.
Very good state of conservation, original gilding.
Empire period.
