The Coat of Arms of the Jannel de Belval
The Jannel de Belval family is a Burgundian family which has its origins in 1290 in the person of Guiot de Jannel. In the 17th century, Jacques de Jannel showed great courage during the siege of Saint Jean de Lône by the imperialists and made his garrison swear to defend the city and die rather than surrender. As a reward, the Grand Condé wrote to Jacques de Jannel to give him authorization to add to his arms which are "azure with a broken gold chevron accompanied by three silver jenettes", a tower in the crest of where a dextrocher escapes armed with a flaming sword. On this occasion, the Grand Condé also gave her authorization to include the motto: Galas fuorum strage fugatur” (J'ai en elle confiance). The Jannel de Belval family is better known under the name Jannel de Vauréal or Belval de Vaureal. Its fiefdom names only appear towards the end of the 18th century (F de Surville)
