Object description :

"Paris 1819-1838, Mustard Pot In Solid Silver And Crystal At The Vieillard By Quentin Baschelet"
Superb mustard pot with "à jour" decoration by the silversmith Quentin BASCHELET. The body and handles are formed of armfuls of palms, flowers and florets. The lid is bordered by a frieze of laurel leaves and topped by a pinecone grip on a radiating terrace. It rests on a circular base adorned with a frieze of palms and stylised fleurs-de-lis on a starburst background, and sits on a quadrangular base with lion's paw feet topped with the same palms.

Cut crystal lining, probably from the BACCARAT manufacture, former Cristalleries Royales du Creusot..

Marks :
•    Vieillard 1er titre (French mark for solid silver 950/1000 between 1819 and 1838).
•    Garantie de Paris.
•    Goldsmith : Quentin BASCHELET.

Gross weight: 230 grams.
Net weight: 167 grams.

Quentin BASCHELET, HUGUET's successor, was a Parisian silversmith based at 13, cour de Harlay. He had his hallmark inscribed in 1815. The end of his activity is unknown, but BASCHELET pieces can be found after 1838.
His guarantee number is 1748.

Quentin BASCHELET was a renowned silversmith. In particular, he made part of the BRANICKI service, for General-Count François-Xavier BRANICKI and his wife1, alongside prestigious silversmiths such as ODIOT and François-Dominique NAUDIN. Exhibited at the 1819 Exhibition of the Products of French Industry in the Louvre, the service was probably transferred to the Wilanowoa palace after the Countess's death in 1838. A tea and coffee service is still on display, but most of the pieces were sold by the Russian government and some are in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

1 Francis-Xavier BRANICKI (1731-1819) and Alexandra Vasilievna von ENGELHARDT (1754-1838), niece of Prince POTEMKINE, married in 1781. Franciszek Ksawery BRANICKI was a Polish aristocrat, staroste of Halicz and grand-hetman of the Crown. Very close to King Stanislaus II, he was one of the main leaders of the Targowica Confederation. The BRANICKI family's fortune was considerable, due to the property received by François-Xavier, but also to the immense fortune brought as a dowry by his wife, who some theories suggest was the illegitimate daughter of CATHERINE II and Prince POTEMKINE.
