"William Sartorius : Huge “still Life With Fruits 1739”"
William Sartorius (active in London in the second third of the 18th century): enormous “Still life with fruit”, oil on canvas 107 x 111 cm, mounted in a carved and gilded wooden frame 119 x 123 cm (aged gilding). Relining, small restorations. Signed and dated: W. Sartorius Pinxit A° 1739 for William Sartorius painted in the year 1739. Little is known about this unknown artist from Bénézit, other than that he was active in London around 1730-1740, so much so that his signed works are often regularly attributed to Georges William Sartorius (1759-1828) even though the latter, although probably from the same family (son? grandson?), was born well after their creation! The very large format of this Still Life, combined with the realism with which the different fruits and leaves are painted standing out against a deliberately dark background, gives it a plush and warm side worthy of an English manor house!
