Pendulum with Love and the Butterfly Nicolas-Pierre-François Dubuc known as Dubuc the elder (watchmaker) Patinated and gilded bronze with ormolu Paris, circa 1795-1800 Directoire period H. 40; 20; 15 cm Beautiful pendulum with love and a butterfly, it rests on a rectangular base supported by four spinning top legs, the bollard-shaped body presents in the middle the movement flanked by four rosettes, the sides representing neoclassical masks in diamond reserves. The enameled movement with Roman numerals is signed by Dubuc Aîné watchmaker. The top of the clock shows a love with his bow and arrows and his banner putting a butterfly above a brazier. This is a mythological illustration linked to love. The body has a very beautiful and thick original mercury gilding, which alternates with a gunmetal patina. Nicolas Pierre François Dubuc known as Dubuc Aîné The Parisian watchmaker Nicolas-Pierre-François Dubuc, known as the elder, was active in the capital from the end of the reign of Louis XVI to the first years of the Empire (see Tardy, Dictionary of watchmakers French, Paris, 1971, p.193). Most certainly older brother of the watchmaker Jean-Baptiste-Charles-Gabriel Dubuc, known as the younger, he enjoyed great notoriety among the great Parisian watch collectors and set up his workshop successively on rue du Grand-Hurleur, rue du Grenier-Saint -Lazare and rue Michel-Lecomte.
