A very rare and early piece of antropomorphic earthenware depicting a smiling child holding a strawberry. This type of production is extremely rare and far precedes the antique-style busts with "palette" decoration. It is therefore a genuine exhibition piece.
Mainly executed in reserve with a few rare highlights of blue and yellow. This piece features a very specific type of decoration for the period.
A compendiario" decoration
This is a rough decoration applied to enhance the thick, covering white enamel on which it is painted.
The origin of this decoration lies in Faenza, a major centre of craftsmanship. It was not until the mid-16th century that it appeared on Italian majolica. The style quickly spread throughout Italy, France, Holland and Eastern Europe, where the reputation of Faenza's "whites" became widespread. Each country uses its own models, making it possible to distinguish the different productions.
