Object description :

"Broken Grand Duchess In Walnut Louis Lxv Period, Circa 1760."
Broken beech duchess in two parts in molded and carved wood decorated with flowers. It rests on 4 arched legs, connected together by a sinuous belt, molded and sculpted on the front and cushioning the front legs with foliage and flowers. Very good quality of sculpture Parisian work from the Louis XV period around 1760. H x LXD = 97 x 77 x 204 Some accidents and damaged fabrics on the cushion. Price €2200 What we think of it: a beautiful model, with good proportions (204 in length!!), the sculpture is well done and the seat is good. The fabric is damaged, particularly at the cushion (which I am going to have changed since it is a very classic and reissued Lelièvre Damascus). Did you know ? : The reign of Louis XV is marked by the presence of women. More assertive, women reign over the Parisian salons, imbuing themselves with wit and philosophy. The sense of elegance takes precedence. At this time, we greatly diversified the furniture that already existed, but sometimes invented new ones. Just like cabinet furniture, seats give rise to new original creations. Hence the “broken duchess”. In the 18th century, fashionable under Louis XV, the "broken duchess" was a chair with a back, long enough for a seated person to extend their legs. It is divided into two or three distinct and separable parts, and is used most often by women. La duchesse is the old name for the piece of furniture that designates a daybed called a “duchess bed”. Singular, the “broken” duchess, composite seat, established itself as the fashionable female seat from the years 1745 to 1780.
