Object description :

"Peacock Wall Hanging - Indochina Late 19th-early 20th"
We present this hanging on cotton embroidered in silk threads with Peacock decoration. The latter is represented perched on a flowering tree, surrounded by two butterflies. The embroidery work is of great finesse and in perfect condition. This embroidery was brought back from Indochina at the beginning of the 20th century by a high-ranking French official on his return to France. The Peacock is known as "the bird of Confucius" (Kongkiao) by homophony with its own name KONGQUE. A spirit of fire, the peacock has always been considered the symbol of beauty, dignity and immortality. He was undoubtedly one of the models to create the legendary Phoenix. His feathers were awarded by the Emperor for services rendered to both civil and military Mandarins. Depending on the importance of the honors, the feathers were classified as “floral pattern”, “green color” or “one, two or three ocelli”. For delivery please contact us.
