"Great Landscape. Gustave Mascart (1834-1914). French School."
Magnificent and large landscape from the 19th century representing houses bordering a canal and a city in the background (possibly Colmar). the canvas is very finely colored and very luminous. In the background, many details of a city with a cathedral. Distracted presence of small characters. The canvas which has been re-canvased is in excellent condition in a sublime channel frame. no restoration required. The canvas is signed lower right and the frame bears a small copper cartridge “Gustave Mascart 1834-1914” at the bottom center. Gustave Mascart is a painter born in Valenciennes in the second part of the 19th Century. His taste for topographical views led him to pay particular attention to his drawing which is of impeccable precision. His inspiration remains that of a man from the north, familiar with cities crossed by the canals bordering the facades of the houses. He started at the salon in 1880. His art extended that of the Dutch veduttists. A cleverly distributed blonde light highlights the architecture. He also exhibited Channel ports. The museums of Saintes and Berney keep his works. Very good references, dictionary of painters (Bénézit), the little masters of painting, dictionary of French painters of the 19th century. Dimensions of the canvas alone, 92 cm x 65 cm. A 30 Landscape. in its splendid frame, 110 cm x 82 cm.
