Portrait of the restoration period, post Napoleonic wars. Stylistically the painting is found in the transition period from the late Empire period to the beginning of Romanticism. The new artistic trends can be seen in the increased naturalism, representation of the landscape/nature, in the contrasts, and in a greater emotionality of the person represented. Detailed but loose is the way to describe the winter dress: high-waisted dress, lace collar, Kashmir shawl, a gold chain with a cross, rings.
The painting is an excellent example of 1820s portraiture.
Leon Cogniet is a romantic and neoclassical painter, studying in Paris alongside Gericault and Delacroix.
He is remembered both as a portraitist and as a painter of historical subjects, but also for his splendid lithographs.
A curiosity: he is the author of the portrait of Madame Clicquot. (Madame Clicquot born Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin, Widow Clicquot or Veuve Clicquot (16 December 1777 – 29 July 1866), known as the "Grande Dame of Champagne", was a French Champagne producer. The brand and company of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin still bears her name.)
