Eugène Smits was a Belgian painter born in Antwerp in 1826 and died in Schaerbeek in 1912. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels where he took classes with François-Joseph Navez. He also trained in Paris and Rome. He exhibited from 1875 and was a member of the Free Society of Fine Arts of Brussels in 1868.
