Did you know ? : There are two Regency periods. The first period of the English Regency style (1790 - 1820), close to the French styles of the Directory and the Consulate, begins with the regency of the Kingdom of England by the Prince of Wales (1762-1830). It refers to models from antiquity. Like the creations of Thomas Hope, the shape of the furniture becomes more severe. The shiny surfaces with very sober ornamentation are just enhanced with rare gilded bronzes. The second period of the English Regency style (1820-1830), concomitant with the French style of the Empire and the Restoration, corresponds to the reign of George IV. It is enriched by a more ostentatious decoration which gives an impression of power. The heavy and monumental aesthetic of English furniture is reinforced by large flat surfaces decorated with important motifs of Greek, Roman, Egyptian and sometimes exotic inspiration. The use of mahogany, large smooth surfaces and sober decorations of antique and Etruscan inspiration make it a refined and very elegant style. The saber-shaped legs and the upside-down top of the chair back are characteristic of English furniture of this period.
