"Bernardino Campi- Vespasiano - 1580 Circa"
This oil painting on canvas depicts Vespasian, one of the eleven depictions of the Caesars executed by Titian Vecellio for Duke Federico II Gonzaga between 1538 and 1549, paintings that were destroyed in Madrid during a fire. Campi had copied the Caesars, making the drawings as models, and later made around 1580 one or perhaps more series of twelve paintings, adding Domitian. This depiction comes from a Mantuan collection.
