"Find: Portrait Of Louis XVI, By Melle Rivière, In Case, Circa 1820"
Sorry, No airmail export for this miniature.Protected in a well-worn green leather case, it is a round miniature, portrait on ivory, with a very gentle physiognomy, of King Louis XVI, painted on beginning of 19th century signed lower left, Melle Rivière.
Hypothesis: perhaps daughter and pupil of Madame Rivière, the well-known miniaturist of the Restoration period.
This is a beautiful Royal portrait from the Bourbon Restoration period.
At period, in legitimist circles there was a real adoration for the deceased King.
Dimensions = diameter: 6cm.
Condition is good, background lightly scratched at 10 o'clock, one water stain near signature which makes it difficult to read. On back: an original paper, handwritten, to decipher. I took the liberty of replacing the damaged interior foil with a modern one, which gives a beautiful light to the King's eyes and complexion.
