"Oc017 Kapkap Set – Solomon Islands"
Kapkap set – Solomon Islands Kapkap set made of shell enhanced with a cut-out of a stylized bird motif in tortoiseshell. The shell is pierced in its center, and very fine cords of twisted plant fibers hold the scale pattern in place. Very characteristic work from the Solomon Islands, for a male ornament, worn during dances. The round shape represents the full moon, and the pattern generally stylizes a frigate bird, a very important bird for these Pacific people, since when it dives, it shows fishermen the schools of fish. Sometimes it happens that this motif represents the spine or ribs of an ancestor. Note an extremely well-made indigenous repair on the left side which gives the object additional value. Old restoration, not altering at all the aesthetics of the whole, and giving a particular charm to this pendant. Otherwise, very good state of conservation and magnificent patina.
