"Jade Buddha Statuette, Early 20th Century"
Buddha in nephrite jade. The sculpture is mounted on its original wooden base. Buddha is portrayed as corpulent and laughing. This popular image of the wise man comes from Chinese and Japanese Buddhism. It symbolizes generosity and abundance. This representation is not universal, however, and in other Buddhist traditions, Buddha is often depicted as thin and ascetic, recalling his journey to enlightenment through asceticism.
