"Poychrome Carved Wood Group Representing Saint Roch, The Child And The Dog. 18th Century Period"
Beautiful statue of Saint Roch, standing, putting forward his right leg to show his wound. Here, the latter is hidden by the small sign marked August 16 – the date of his birthday – and which the child is holding. Beautiful sculpted head framed by hair with long curls and a brown beard; Saint Roch, a pilgrim, is here richly dressed in a green capeline over a draped red mantle and revealing his gold robe which he lifts with one hand to show the site of the wound. He carries a small bag on his belt, he wears boots closed with a ribbon and a gold pompom. In his left hand he holds the pilgrim's staff to which the gourd is attached. At his feet stands on the right side the angel with a baby face and brown hair. He is simply dressed in a gold drape around his waist. To his left the dog with brown fur holds a loaf of bread in his mouth. Accidents at the feet of the saint, the angel and the dog, a finger missing from Saint Roch. Wear and repeats of the polychromy. Gourd from a later period. In the Bible, Saint Roch, born in Montpellier around 1350, is the patron to be invoked against the plague, he lives in the forest where he is comforted by an angel and supplied by a dog.
