"Silver Bezel Return From Egypt Circa 1798-1809"
Slightly flared silver bezel decorated on the body with Egyptian masks and on the neck with openwork palmette motifs. On the two spiral-shaped handles hang two twisted rings. The base of the bezel is decorated with protruding gadroons. The removable lid is decorated with a seed-shaped grip. The interior of the bezel is entirely in vermeil. The bezel is characteristic of the “Return from Egypt” style which developed upon the return of Napoleon I's Egyptian campaigns. With the “Description of Egypt” we see Egyptian elements appear in the decorative arts such as sphinxes or here the heads of men wearing nemes. This style only lasted a short period and was replaced by the Empire style.
