"Pierre Antoine Patel (1648 Paris - 1707) Signed, "southern Landscape With Ruins And Lovers""
Pierre-Antoine Patel (1648 Paris - 1707) Southern landscape with ruins and lovers Tree-lined landscape in a nocturnal atmosphere, in the foreground of ancient ruins with courtly lovers strolling, next to them a couple of swans like symbol of love, in the background another resting couple and a coastal landscape with an old town. Pierre Antoine Patel was the son of the artist Pierre Patel (1605 - 1676), originally from Picardy and already active in Paris in the 1630s, and with whom he probably learned. Like his father, he also specialized in depictions of imaginary and idealized landscapes of Italy with Greco-Roman ruins, although in a more picturesque and freer approach to nature, bathed in warm sunlight. His paintings are exhibited, among others, at the Hermitage, the National Museum in Warsaw, the Princeton University Art Museum and the Louvre. Oil/canvas, lined; Signed on the right and at the bottom of the column; 44cm x 32cm. Frame
