Created in 1662 by Colbert, the Manufacture Royale des Gobelins was to supply the works intended to furnish the royal residences and serve as diplomatic gifts. But the great design of the factory is above all political.
It must show the power of France and be at the service of the king's political propaganda.
The first works provided by Charles le Brun, the king's first painter and director of the Manufacture, glorified the king in an allegorical manner: tapestry of the Elements and Seasons, tapestry of the History of Alexander. The hanging of The History of the King, initiated in 1662, will break with tradition. The program designed for this hanging was to glorify King Louis XIV through the significant events of his early reign demonstrating his diplomatic talents, his military bravery and his vision for the arts.
Dimensions: 175x126 cm
Condition: Very good condition, three small white dots in the upper border of the tapestry (see photos).
