"Claude Bellan .. Oil On Canvas Signed On The Back .."
born in Bordeaux in 1933, Claude Bellan began painting in 1952. he encountered the reality of painting in Vélasquez, Poussin, Cézanne, Matisse, Bacon, and certain artists revealed after the war such as Bores, Estève and Boissonnet. in 1957, he moved to Paris and met Herta Lebk, also a painter. in the 1950s, when abstraction triumphed, he became interested in landscape, later, when pop art took hold, he worked on self-portraits, and when the time came for installations and conceptual work he he clings to the canvas, to the figuration, convinced that there he has a chance to achieve what he is looking for... a form of shift and permanent questioning. Claude Bellan expresses himself using the traditional techniques of his art but the questions he asks have the urgency and acuteness of the present time, he allows us to see, to think, walking off the beaten track and thus compelling the viewer to define itself in relation to it, and here, it joins with force and relevance the great debates which underlie current art.46/56cm
