Very beautiful watercolor representing five birds of different species common in France and six butterflies. A fly and a snail complete the bestiary of this sheet. The watercolor is signed lower left Édouard Mérite (1867-1941). A student of the sculptors Louis Ernest Barrias and Emmanuel Fremiet, he took over from the latter as drawing professor at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. The watercolor is framed in a copper leaf frame on a wooden core and measures 25x37 cm unframed.
