Large wooden brush pot covered with black and red lacquer (using the maki-e technique) and gold and mother-of-pearl flakes. The decoration depicts a proud peacock, which in Japan is a symbol of wisdom, love, goodwill, caring and kindness. Around the animal, peony flowers, whose cultivation in Japan dates back to the Nara period, symbolize favorable development, happiness, wealth and nobility. Peacocks and peonies were found in Japan's most important gardens, and as a decorative motif they often adorned the kimonos of young Furisode women, as well as wedding attire.
