Oil on canvas 60x81 cm "Reception in Algeria" Around 1910
Monogrammed lower right, titled on the back
Paul Cirou was a student at the Académie Julian and exhibited at the major Parisian Salons from 1904, then at the Salon d'Automne in Algeria, of which he is one of the creators.
From his travels in North Africa, notably in Algeria, where he eventually settled in 1912, he brought back orientalist scenes which owe nothing to the picturesque subjects.
The intimate scene in Algeria that we present is modern in a post-impressionist style, with a concern for simplification and an interesting stylization in an original and harmonious composition.
He is called an "African Maurice Denis", it is the same clear and mystical conception, adapted to the beauties of Arab types and Mediterranean gardens, that he offers.
He participated in the Colonial Salons of French Artists, Algerian Orientalist Artists, Salon d'Automne...
