"Nyssia Au Bain, Gilt Bronze Sculpture, Antique Draped Woman By Aizelin"
Very beautiful gilded bronze sculpture representing Nyssia bathing. Nyssia, Queen of Libya, wife of King Candaule, short story by Théophile Gauthier published in the press in October 1844. It seems that the beauty of this woman inspired the sculptor Eugène-Antoine AIZELIN (1821-1902) to model this sculpture. This sculpture sometimes also bears the name of Suzanne au bain in reference to the Biblical episode. The young woman is represented standing, leaning against a block of stone, she is superbly dressed in a drape covering her privacy. The facial features are very fine and graceful. Very beautiful warm and vibrant gilding which appears to be mercury. Handwritten signature in the bronze, Aizelin Sculptor and Gautier and Albinet Editeurs. Period late 19th century around 1890. Delivery 30 euros in France, 80 euros in the EU and 150 euros rest of the world.
