Alix Aymé (1894-1989)

Alix Aymé was born in March 1894 in Marseille and died in July 1989 in Montlignon, at the age of 95. Passionate about art since her childhood, she studied piano and drawing in Toulouse before joining Maurice Denis, emblematic figure of the Nabis, and developing her skills at her side. From 1920, she moved to China where she made several scientific expeditions.

Alix Aymé lived in Indochina between 1920 and 1945. She was then a professor at the School of Fine Arts in Hanoi. She painted popular scenes, portraits of children or adults and immersed herself in Asian culture. Despite the colonial context and all that it implies for a female artist, she shows great bravery and multiplies the trips in Asia, to the meeting of peoples to which she will pay tribute throughout her life.

Although the object of study for which she is known remains the culture and the daily life of the Asian peoples she met, Alix Aymé has proposed throughout her career quite varied subjects. So we find in addition to portraits, interiors and scenes of life, often rural landscapes that she could observe during her various trips. During his career, the artist also painted murals for the Royal Palace of Luang Prabang. Alix Aymé’s work is therefore both vast and plural.

Very close to intellectual circles, lively and curious in Paris, Alix Aymé frequents personalities such as the Saint-Exupéry family or Foujita.
Alix Aymé is known for reintroducing the delicate technique of lacquer in Vietnamese art. She even taught her students at the Hanoi School of Fine Arts and wrote several articles on this process. Aymé will also open up to new techniques such as etching, silk painting with gold application, watercolor, etc. She uses a large number of techniques very different from each other which makes her work particularly interesting. Both in his drawings and in his paintings, the artist never ceases to reinvent himself.
