- in ancient France, court mourning was taken with a sword devoid of flashy ornaments, gilding, silvering or other, and, on the contrary, with a mount generally made of a fairly dark shade of steel and pulling in besides on purple. On the other hand, the soldiers wore mourning with a crepe on the said sword, on the hat as well as in the form of an armband. Although back then the color of mourning was purple, not black.
