Auguste CARLI (1868-1930), tinted and signed plaster statue, “Chloe playing the aulos” Dimensions: height 70 cm / width: 33 cm, plaster base: 26 cm x 20 marble: 29.5 cm x 29.5 CONDITION: > surface cracks on two fingers > trace of restoration on one arm (hardly visible) Heroine of the play by Longus, a Greek writer from the second or third century, “Daphnis and Chloe”, Chloe, a young shepherdess is in love with Daphnis, young goatherd. In the novel, she plays the syrinx. But a neoclassical adaptation has her playing the aulos, a double Greek flute. Born in Marseille, Auguste Henri Carli was a student of Émile Aldebert (1828-1924) then of Jules Cavelier (1814-1894). He is considered one of the masters of Marseille statuary of the 1900s.
