"France, Auxerrois, End Of The 19th Century, Polychrome Earthenware Salad Bowl Called "at The Tree Of Love""
Auxerrois, end of the 19th century, superb salad bowl in polychrome earthenware with a so-called “love tree” decoration. This theme was very popular during the last third of the 18th century until the very beginning of the 19th century. Six women are at the foot of a tree in which ten men are perched, at the top of which sits an angel. Looking for a husband, they work to seduce them or force them down with the aim of romantic conquest. In this way the iconography is avant-garde because it gives the initiative for this conquest to women. The texts which accompany the scenes, both on the wing and in the center of the composition, are always very crisp, oscillating between the amusing and the ridiculous. The salad bowl bears the year 1775 because it was at this time that the so-called “love tree” salad bowls were most often created, mainly in Nevers. Very pretty colors and good quality of execution.
Diameter: 35 cm.
Good condition except for a discreet crack at the bottom right and three chips on the wings caused by the wall fixing system, as is very often the case. All without any impact on aesthetics.
