"Louis XIV Period Travel Box"
LOUIS XIV PERIOD TRAVEL BOX This Louis XIV period travel box serves as a safe. In solid oak veneered with violet wood reinforced with corner strips and brass hinges decorated with foliage. Tilting side handles allow transport. This box opens by a hidden mechanism which allows the lid to be lifted revealing its interior space in which there is a latch allowing the flap of the front to be opened which gives access to two drawers and a hiding place in the amount which separates the drawers. With an interior leather covering, this small safe was intended for transporting valuables and jewelry. This type of travel safe was made in London between 1660 and 1720, undoubtedly by Edward Traherne, a renowned cabinetmaker who distributed this model in Europe. His “Strong-boxes” had the characteristic of being able to attach to the floor of a stagecoach or to the shelves of a ship’s reserves. In fact, two lag screws pass right through the sides of the chest in order to be able to screw into the wood, thus fixing it in the place where it was placed.
