"Important Bronze “the Letter” By Jl. Grégoire – Late 19th Century"
Large Bronze with brown patina signed Jean-Louis Grégoire (1840-1890) representing a young woman in the antique style reading a letter. With her right hand the young woman, wearing a crown holding back her curly hair, conscientiously reads her missive, her sweet face lowered. Dressed in a lightly draped toga with sculpted ornamentation, she lets her left arm hang holding another leaf. An allegory of literature and poetry, this work is finely chiseled and signed on its terrace “L. Grégoire” and “Société des bronzes”. Jean-Louis Grégoire (1840-1890) is the son of an engraver, he exhibited at the salon from 1867 busts of contemporaries, mythological works and after the defeat of 1870, patriotic subjects. Société des bronzes de Paris: In operation approximately from 1875 to 1930, this foundry was located at 41 boulevard du Temple and 14 rue Béranger in Paris. A manufacturing workshop is also mentioned at 117 boulevard Voltaire.
