Sebastiaen Vrancx was one of Flanders’ most important painters of military scenes during the Eighty Years’ War.
Our painting represents marauders attacking a carriage with four Flemish travellers. Their goods and jewellery are stolen, both husbands will be kidnapped, in exchange for a ransom. Vrancx painted it close to the end of the first half of that War, just before the start in 1609 of the Twelve Years’ Truce.
