Resumption of the painting by Rubens kept at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Rubens, a virtuoso of the brush loving life, its warmth, its quivering, its brilliance and its multiple facets, painted portraits of humans and the world with the sensitivity of an artist with a fiery temperament.
The exhilarating effect of his works was enhanced by his ability to treat traditional religious themes in a remarkably expressive form.
The scene was transported to the author's contemporary world; the magnificent dress of the Virgin shows all the details of women's fashion from the beginning of the 17th century. The characters exude the happiness of family life, often represented by the paintings with religious motifs painted by the artist in his maturity. By using a new range of tones, going from the brown tones of the background, through the gray blues and white of the drapery, to the shimmering red of the Madonna's dress, the master gives his painting an astonishing expression.
Even apart from this interpretation, this painting emanates a sort of lyrical grace; the mystery of the Madonna and Child gives it a poetic charm that there is no need to put into context.
