*Gustave Serrurier-Bovy Belgian architect and decorator born in 1858 and died in 1910. He must be counted among the first representatives of the Art Nouveau on the European continent. The son of a carpentry entrepreneur, he completed his secondary studies at the Athénée de Liège and the École des Beaux-arts. In 1884, after his marriage to Maria Bovy, the Serrurier-Bovy firm was founded in Liège. Its initial activity consisted of importing furniture and decorative elements from Great Britain and Japan. In 1894, he created furniture himself, in Brussels, he presented a study and, the following year, a craftsman's bedroom. These are works freed from reminiscences of old styles. European critics hail its originality, the master cabinetmaker will be able to exhibit abroad. It opens a branch in Brussels and soon in Paris. At the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris, in collaboration with the architect René Dulong, Serrurier created a restaurant, the Blue Pavilion, whose exuberant decor, very Art Nouveau, contrasted with the sobriety of the white lacquered furniture. For the social housing built for the Liège exhibition in 1905, he created workers' furniture which excited the leaders of the Belgian Workers' Party.
