Very beautiful Caucasian in wool on hand-knotted wool, measuring 108 cm x 193 cm in length, before 1950, in very good condition.
The rare relief work of the patterns executed with chisels gives depth to the carpet.
This hand-knotted antique Caucasian rug is an archetypal example of regional oriental rugs originating from the Azerbaijani village of Karakashly. This local variation of the Afshan Kuba motif features four right-angled medallions and cruciform decorations topped with trees of life.
These Karakashly trademarks are accompanied by leaves and hooks.
Numerous “kotchaks”, stylized ram horns, show the importance of the sheep in these regions.
Four-tone color combination of orange, purple, camel and ivory makes for a beautiful, bright rug on quality wool-on-wool. This prototypical Karakashly field is surrounded by typical Caucasian S-hook-shaped borders, secondary triangle-shaped borders resembling goblets that embody the essence of local tribal motifs. Two small braids enclose a line of small S's, alternating orange and ivory, symbolizing God, and the importance of the beliefs of these countries. A line of "Medahils" in ivory shades on camel, arrowheads, encloses this abundantly decorated piece.
A wide sinuous band runs along the border, a symbol of water and eternity.
The fringes, selvedges and velvet are in magnificent condition.
