Object description :

"Eugène Labitte Study Haystacks"
Straw stacks by Eugène Labitte (1858-1937). Eugène Labitte, after a stint in the studio of Fernand Cormon, settled in Concarneau where he frequented the important colony of French and foreign painters. Looking for subjects for paintings in the scenes of daily life of peasants, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1888 and 1912. Our painting is probably a preparatory study for one of his numerous haymaking scenes (Chartres Museum), intended for study the effects of summer afternoon light on haystacks. The painting is signed lower right and framed in a modern frame. The painting alone measures 31.5x39.5 cm.
