"Quimperlé, Fair Of Old People, Dated 1926"
Oil on strong cardboard, dimensions: 73 cms x 55 cms without frame and 85 cms x 67 cms with frame, representing the Vieilles fair in Quimperlé. By Fernand Jeanneau (1884-1966), Signed lower and left. The painter also signed, titled, dated precisely and located this painting in Quimperlé, with an inscription in his hand, on the back of the painting: F.Jeanneau, Foire des Veilles ((the painter forgot the i) in Quimperlé, afternoon of March 21, 1926 (see photos). Inscription formerly discovered under the protective paper on the back of the painting and formerly enhanced to better read it. Fresh and bright colors reflecting the festive atmosphere of this very lively fair and well known to the people of Quimper. Born in Châteaubriand (Loire-Atlantique), this marine pharmacist came, during his wanderings, to stay in Quimperlé in 1920. There he met Louise Le Goff, whom he married. But we ultimately know little about him. Self-taught, he nevertheless demonstrates great talent and technical mastery. In his paintings, he notably painted Tunisia, which he visited, Brittany, and Quimperlé a lot. “Although he is self-taught, his work is nevertheless very composed and full of reflection,” explains Milena Sécher. He painted an image of the city as colorful and joyful.” A town, where he lived at Place Gambetta after the bombings of Lorient, and until his death. Critics described him, at one time, as the Water Wizard.
