This is a very beautiful model of Jizai okimono. Japanese work carried out by Japanese gunsmiths during the Meiji era at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century.
this type of Jizai okimono was often works of mastery intended to show the dexterity of Japanese gunsmiths and sold for export through the counters of the Compagnie des Indes etc...
our lobster is fully articulated:
the eyes, the antennae, legs, tail etc...
the rivets are very barely visible.
It's impressive when you hold it in your hand because everything moves just like a real one!
it is in very good condition and has just one tin solder visible in the on-air photos from the front to the right when you look at it facing you.
This is a great model. Usually we find them with a bronze-colored patina, but ours is in silvered bronze.
Jizai okimono are like pieces of goldwork in Japan and are considered today as collector's items,
the materials different: wood, ivory, bronze, wrought iron etc.,
the subjects also: crustaceans , lobsters, crab, curry comb, but also birds, snakes, insects and dragons!
the rarest are made of wrought iron and are sometimes signed by families of illustrious gunsmiths.
a superb Jizai okimono, a very beautiful collectible animal bronze.
