"Chofa, Wat Thai Temple Ridge Ornament"
Temple ridge ornament known, depending on interpretations, as “Garuda” (Sanskrit: Eagle), mount of the god Vishnu or “Hong/Hamsa” (Thai: Hong /Sanskrit: Hamsa) representing the mythical bird or swan/goose, animal vehicle (vâhana) of the god Brahma. Beautiful original patina, mixing gilding and red and yellow bowl, (Colors of Brahma). Very beautiful copy, very complete, still possessing its glasswork forming the eyes, patina covered with calcifications and lichens. Northern Thailand or Laos, 18th century. Delivered with its white or black steel base, adjustable inclination of the shofa. Provenance: Estate of the collector and art dealer Claude de Marteau. Sold with certificate of provenance.
