Quote from the Fondation Custodia regarding the stamp of Alphonse Legros' studio :
“The reproduced stamp was affixed by Lucien A. Legros, on proofs that his father had by chance left unsigned and on the few proofs printed after the artist's death. The habit of signing the proofs had been provoked by the demands of American amateurs and dealers, as a guarantee that the printing was not surreptitious. The stamp affixed by the son is a guarantee that the number of proofs printed, set by A. Legros before his death, has not been exceeded; the coppers were destroyed by the son, once the printing was finished.”
