“Woman lying with crossed arms” or “Young woman sleeping” bronze by James Pradier, Susse cast iron, signed James Pradier. Very rare statuette model with a very beautiful brown patina. 9.2 x 18.4 x H 6.7 cm. Sculpture bearing the stamp of the Parisian founder Susse Frères and dated 1842, probably published during the artist's lifetime. Precise carving and cast iron of good quality, original brown patina. Referenced in the catalog raisonné p.315 under n°185 James PRADIER, pseudonym of Jean-Jacques PRADIER, born in Geneva on May 23, 1790 and died in Bougival (Yvelines) on June 4, 1852, is a Franco-Swiss sculptor and painter. Appreciated during his lifetime, James PRADIER, major sculptor of the 19th century, Louis-Philippe period, first prize of Rome in 1813, received numerous orders from the State, notably the Victories surrounding the tomb of Napoleon I at the Invalides, Place de la Concorde, the statues of Lille and Strasbourg, the fountain of the Esplanade in Nimes.... He was considered one of the greatest sculptors of his time, until his death during the Second Empire. His works have enjoyed great posterity.
