View Of A Dutch Port At Night By Elias Pieter Van Bommel (1819 Amsterdam - 1890 Vienna)

View of a Dutch port by the Dutch Austrian Vedute and the marine painter Elias Pieter van Bommel (1819 in Amsterdam - 1890 in Vienna). Van Bommel studied at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam and with the landscape painter George Andries Roth. Under the influence of Roth, he initially painted mainly landscapes. In the 1850s, however, he turned to detailed vedute and marine painting. Some of his works also have historical value, particularly due to the detailed and reliable depiction of historic buildings. He created some paintings with his brother-in-law, Dominicus Anthonius Peduzzi. Van Bommel painted in the Netherlands, notably in Amsterdam, where he lived, in Rotterdam, Dordrecht, Scheveningen, Vlissingen and Hoorn. He also made numerous study trips to Belgium, Germany, France (Paris), Hungary and Italy. He died in Vienna in 1890, where he had settled at the end of his life at the age of 69. Van Bommel was the teacher of Jan David Geerling Grootveld. He exhibited his works from 1833 to 1839 and from 1841 to 1859 at exhibitions in Amsterdam, The Hague, Groningen and Leeuwarden.
