This pair of masterfully circular oil-in-gray paintings was created around 1780-s. Both scenes date back to two poems by the English poet Matthew Prior (1664 Middlesex - 1721). The subject, style and composition of these paintings correspond absolutely to all the stylistic criteria of the works of the famous Austro-Swiss allegorical and neo-classicist portraitist Angelica Kauffmann (1741 - 1807). These paintings have been confirmed by experts at the renowned Austrian Hassfurther Gallery in Vienna as authentic works by Angelica Kauffmann (a copy of the quote will be attached to the paintings). We found copper engravings after these paintings, published by engraver Thomas Burke in 1784. It was further stated that Kauffmann created several similar circular gray paintings in 1780 (see additional photos from "Retrospective. Angelica Kauffmann", Exhibition Catalogue, Düsseldorf-Munich-Chur, 1998-1999, edition Gerd Hatje, 1999).
