Ancient Russian icon
Tempera on wood with a gold background
19th century
cm. 40 x 50
Very good condition
Rare Russian icon depicting the Virgin with the child, standing full-length, in regal clothes and with the crown on her head.
Mother and Son within a glow of light, surrounded by a series of scenes from the Gospels of the New Testament.
The fifteen images are described with excellent miniature painting that manages to capture the smallest details of the landscapes and characters that animate the scenes.
The sequence of episodes depicted follows the direction from left to right, maintaining the chronology of events:
The Annunciation, The Visitation, The birth of Jesus, The Presentation in the Temple, Jesus among the doctors, The Transfiguration, The flagellation, the crowning with thorns, The ascent to Calvary, The Crucifixion, The Resurrection, The Ascension, The Descent of the Holy Spirit, The Assumption of the Virgin, The Coronation of the Virgin.
At the bottom on both sides of the table two groups of Saints prostrate themselves at the foot of the "Mater Dei Regina Mundi".
The excellent condition of the Icon allows us to capture the perfection of all the images down to the smallest details.
The work, of evident figurative effectiveness, stands out for the great variety of the chromatic range, where warm and lively colors stand out, which stand out against the gold background.
The icon is intact, without restorations and repaintings with the typical curvature and a pleasant crack on the pictorial surface.
