"Chofa Naga, Buddhist Temple Ridge Ornament"
Temple ridge ornament, carved in wood with the head of Naga, guardian of treasures, fertility, prosperity and immortality. It is another emanation of the god Vishnu. Thailand, 18/19th century. Beautiful patina of faded wood, covered with vestiges of polychromy mixed with calcified lichens. Delivered with its white or black steel base, adjustable inclination of the shofa. Sold with its certificate of provenance: Estate of the collector and art dealer Claude de Marteau. It is still sealed with its export license from the Department of Fine Arts of Thailand which authorized its exit from the territory at the time (year 2519 in the Buddhist calendar, i.e. 1976).
