Léon Legat was born in 1829 in Paris and died in 1922. A student of Louis Martinet, he was also a friend of Corot and frequented the painters of the school of Barbizon. He participated in the Paris Salon in 1848, then regularly from 1861 to 1891, and in the Salon des Artistes Français in 1879. His village scenes, fairs, markets, are populated with characters treated nimbly, under a golden light, in compositions in a very Flemish style.
