"Louis Moreau (1883-1958) "port Of Marseille C. 1915/20" School Of Crozant, Châteauroux, Berry,"
SUPERB and RARE watercolor by Louis Moreau representing the port of Marseille circa 1915/1920, signed lower right. Format without frame 31x46cm and 43x61cm including frame. This is indeed a rare watercolor by Louis Moreau, a superb artist from the Crozant school. I rarely offer his works because I keep most of them as I adore this great painter/engraver, in my opinion. very unknown meaning. Because even if there are several works on him, even if he is fairly well referenced in most catalogs on the Crozant school and the painters of the Creuse valley, we see little of his work. A little more his woodcuts of very high quality, but much less his paintings and watercolors, plus he is often confused with his very numerous homonyms...a bit like Paul Thomas in Limoges. Berrichon, he obviously painted a lot in Berry and the surroundings of Châteauroux, but also in the Creuse valley especially around Crozant and Gargilesse, he also frequented a lot of Brittany especially around Concarneau, then he dragged his gaiters in other regions of France such as Paris and its suburbs, Marseille and the French Riviera, etc... he also painted, drew and engraved superb genre scenes and nudes. He is therefore naturally referenced among the painters of the Crozant school, including in the work of C. Rameix, then in the Les Peintres du Bas Berry 1800/1950 exhibition 1882... Louis Moreau, born in Châteauroux on April 15, 1883 and died in Malakoff on March 9, 1958, was a French painter, engraver, illustrator and libertarian activist. After an apprenticeship in a lithography workshop, he went to Paris in 1900 where he exercised his talents as a painter and engraver under the influence of Bernard Naudin who was his compatriot and his friend. He contributed to the magazine Les Temps nouvelles founded by Jean Grave in 1902 and worked for the editions of Pot Cassé During the First World War, he collaborated with Le Semeur, a newspaper printed clandestinely in 1916 by Maurice Charron (known as Pierre Chardon) then at La Forge , art and literature review (1917-1920). During the interwar period, he donated numerous woodcuts to L'En-dehors, run by Émile Armand. He participates in La Revue anarchiste hosted by Ferdinand Fortin. In July 1937, he offered several of his works for an exhibition and sale for the benefit of orphans of Spanish republicans in the colony of Llansa. After the Second World War, he collaborated with L'Unique published by Émile Armand until 1956 and with L'Homme et la vie founded by Manuel Devaldès in 1946. In 1950, his home in Neuilly appeared on the lists of anarchist addresses to be monitored by the police. This watercolor is in very good condition for its approximately 100 years, delivered in an old golden stick Work guaranteed authentic
